Back on the bus, Stacy took a window seat and frowned through his reflection at the stores and shops they passed along Crater Road. Why was his mom so pissed at him anyway? Sure, he forgot to call or stop by but school kept him busy ... and hadn't that been her idea in the first place?

She could've just as easily called him. Which she did.

Shifting in his seat, Stacy pressed his temple against the window, the glass cool from the a/c unit set into the sill, and stared at the turning hubcaps on the car beside the bus. He kept trying to tell Lamar he should get a set but his friend didn't want them, said they were too modern for his 'vintage'

Firebird. Like the gold rims he had on there now were classics.

Stacy's mother didn't like Lamar much—to be completely honest, that had been part of his friend's appeal in the first place. That and the guy liked to fuck. But they weren't exclusive, whatever gave her that idea? Stacy only stayed with him because he couldn't afford a place of his own. For all his talk of moving onto Ange's garage apartment, that just wasn't practical—Ange barely fit in there, slept on the pull-out couch not a half dozen steps from the front bumper of his car, where would Stacy stay? In the back seat?

A pang of guilt echoed through him at the thought of Ange, someone else he'd been neglecting lately. I'm just so busy with school, he thought, but that wasn't completely true. School had little to do with why he stayed after woodshop 211

every day, didn't it? His classes weren't the reason he religiously set his alarm to get up early every morning. That would be Darian.

Out of everyone he knew, Stacy had been so sure his mother was the one person he could talk to about the way he felt for the guy. And how was that exactly? If he could only talk it out with someone, maybe he'd be able to stumble towards a better understanding of the situation. Didn't Darian like him? He appeared to so what should Stacy do about that?

A little help here would be nice, he thought glumly. Someone to tell him to go for it, or give him the encouragement to make the first move, or something. Deep down he'd wanted his mother to ... if not approve of Darian, at least show some interest in him, for Christ's sake. She could've asked what he was like or pointed out that he appeared to be a step up from the other guys in Stacy's life. Instead she got in his face about it, like he was nothing more than a piece of jailbait trying to grind away at some stodgy old perv. He just liked the guy, Jesus! And even if they did hook up, he wasn't underage any more. And Darian sure as hell wasn't that much older.
